Boomers & Seniors: Face Potential 50% Drop
In Retirement Lifestyle

By John G. McHugh

The Observer: February, 2004

About 50% of baby boomers will likely face a drop in their standard of living at retirement, and many will find themselves largely dependent on government benefits, according to a report from the Congressional Budget Office (CBO).
As John G. McHugh, CEO of Financial Strategies, Inc. points out: Nearly all of the studies that the CBO reviewed assume that Social Security and other government benefits will be paid as required by current law, but the CBO points out that budgetary pressure could cut future benefit levels.

"Because many baby boomers are likely to depend heavily on government benefits for the bulk of their income in retirement, their prospects may be less rosy than recent studies imply," the CBO says.

McHugh states: “Whether you are a senior or baby boomer, the current mortality trends for couples who reach age 65 today, there is a 50% probability that at least one will reach age 95. Furthermore, looking at the historical trends in the investment markets, retirees can expect to live through at least two downturns in the economy over that 30-year period; therefore a greater need to make sure that one has a good portion of their retirement savings in top-quality financial products that provide “safety of principal”.

As G. Glenn Yeatts, Senior Vice President, points out: “Financial Strategies, Inc. specializes in asset preservation for retirement. We focus on building or transferring a portion of a client's assets into “safe money”…the assets and income one can count on. We accomplish this by independently providing top-quality fixed and indexed annuities that are tailored to our client's needs, wants, and demands. We further protect their assets and income from the greatest threat of erosion due to the high costs of long-term care services.”
